Cleaning & Sealing Driveways in Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth & San Antonio
Your home is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, and your driveway is one of its largest exterior features. Proper cleaning is one way to protect that investment. Cleaning your driveway can add curb appeal and increase your home’s value between $10,000 and $15,000. Over time, dirt, debris and mildew can collect on your driveway, degrading the appearance and causing it to deteriorate more quickly. Bacteria and algae feed on limestone and can leave dark streaks on your driveway. If your car is leaking oil or if it is spilled, it can leave an unsightly stain.
Keeping your driveway clean can help avoid expensive repairs and make it safer as well. Dirt, mud and mold can be slippery. The best cleaning method will depend on whether your driveway is concrete, block or asphalt. Asphalt Driveways
An asphalt driveway is comprised of petroleum products and can be damaged by fluids from your car. The best time to clean a liquid stain is as soon as it occurs. Cat litter or baking soda can be used to absorb the liquid. The litter should be left overnight and swept up with a broom. Motor oil, transmission fluid and brake fluid are hazardous substances and must be disposed of properly. Once the liquid portion is removed, any remaining stain can be cleaned by scrubbing with detergent and bleach or a driveway cleaner. When purchasing driveway cleaners, always use cleansers formulated for asphalt since some solvents can damage it. Wear protective safety glasses and rubber gloves whenever handling chemicals. Pressure washing is not recommended for asphalt because it can set the stain more deeply into the material.
Concrete Driveways
Concrete driveways can develop stains from decayed leaves, tire marks and automotive fluids. Pressure washing will remove most surface contaminants as well as stains from leaves, algae, moss or tire marks. To prevent damaging paint or other nearby structures, cover walls or doors with plastic whenever using solvents or other chemicals in conjunction with a pressure washer. Tire marks that cannot be removed by pressure washing may often be eliminated by scrubbing with degreaser. When left out on the driveway, nails, screws and other hardware can oxidize and leave rust stains on the concrete. Rust stains can usually be cleaned by scrubbing with oxalic acid.

Brick & Paver Driveways
Cleaning block, brick, or masonry driveways is often a two-step process. If there are weeds on or between the paving blocks, they should be removed prior to applying weed killer. This is best accomplished on a dry day when no rain is forecast. It is important to take note of the runoff location to prevent poisoning your lawn or garden. Ridding the area of weeds will also help prevent the growth of algae and moss on the pavers. Frequent pressure washing isn’t advised since the pressure can dislodge the joints. If a pressure washer is used, the angle should be maintained at 45 degrees. Acidic cleaners should be avoided to prevent damaging the surface of the pavers. Scrubbing with a mild detergent is recommended.
